What effects does mold on wall putty have on the wall surface?

1. Disrupting the wall’s appearance: Mold can appear in colors such as black, green, and gray. Once it spreads, it forms mold stains that, even after being wiped away later, leave behind pigment deposits, resulting in mottled and uneven walls that severely affect the aesthetic appeal. To restore the wall’s original appearance, the affected areas must be scraped off and repaired. 2. Damaging the putty layer itself: As mold grows, it breaks down the binding components within the putty, causing the putty layer to become powdery, sandy, and flaky, losing its adhesion. When touched by hand, it will crumble into powder, rendering it unsuitable as a base for paint application. The only option is to completely remove the damaged putty and start over from scratch.

Even if you reapply new putty and paint with a topcoat, the unstable substrate may cause issues such as peeling, cracking, and color variations in the painted surface, making it impossible to achieve the desired decorative effect. Moreover, mold may regrow again.
5. Shortening the overall service life of walls: Damage to the putty layer combined with moisture-induced erosion of the substrate will cause the wall’s entire decorative coating (putty plus paint finish) to age prematurely. Walls that could originally last for many years may require renovation in as little as 1–2 years.
